System architecture
ExampleThe operating layer sits beneath your functions and keeps them fed.
Fractional COO
You built a business that works. It just can't run a week without you. We find where the work actually stalls, build the systems to fix it, and put a trained operator on them, day to day.
We take on a few founders at a time. Apply, and if it's a fit, we'll reach out.
What we do
Cambium is an operational architect for founder-led businesses. We map how work moves through yours, find where it stalls, and replace the stall with a system: a workflow, a dashboard, a checklist someone else can run. Then we staff it with an operator, so it keeps running whether you're in the room or not.
The operating layer sits beneath your functions and keeps them fed.
Decisions
After
Owners named, work delegated, next steps visible.
The ops
After
Workflows, dashboards, SOPs, one weekly rhythm.
Your week
After
An operator runs the layer. You run the company.
Who it's for
Cambium works when there's a real engine to build under: a proven offer, steady demand, and the margin to invest in how the business runs.
How it works
Growth stalls in one place at a time: leads slip, onboarding goes sideways, nobody trusts the numbers. We take the constraint that costs you most, build the system that removes it, and hand that system to an operator. The business keeps the layer, the way a tree keeps its rings.
Diagnose
We map how work moves through the business and find where it actually stalls. It is often not where you think.
Build
A workflow, an SOP, an automation, a dashboard. Documented, concrete, and built to be run by someone who is not you.
Hand off
A trained operator takes the system and runs it day to day. Not a slide deck and a goodbye. A person, accountable for the outcome.
Grow
With the day-to-day off your desk, your hours go where only you can spend them: the offer, the relationships, the next move.
In practice
Where it stalls
The system it becomes
StallsLeads slip through the cracks
BecomesA sales workflow with automated follow-up
StallsOnboarding is different every time
BecomesOne SOP, run the same way by anyone
StallsNobody trusts the numbers
BecomesA dashboard with the few numbers that matter
StallsEvery week is firefighting
BecomesA weekly review with owners and next steps
The lead workflow as it runs: each step triggers the next, and your team only touches the judgment calls.
And you own all of it. The workflows, the docs, the dashboards. If we ever part ways, everything keeps working and everything stays with you.
The operating cadence
Systems drift when nobody looks at them. Part of what we install is the looking: a scorecard with the numbers that matter, and standing reviews at the right altitude.
The scorecard behind the weekly review: a clear read, at a glance.
Illustrative example, not client data.
Weekly
A short standing review of the scorecard: what moved, what stalled, who owns the next step. No status theater.
Monthly
A deeper look at how the systems themselves perform. What gets tightened, what gets retired.
Quarterly
Step back, pick the next constraint worth removing, and point the operating layer at it.
The same job done the same way every time, by anyone on the team.
Built to hand off
Nothing we build lives in one person's head. Each system comes with the SOP and checklist to run it, so a new hire or a new operator picks it up and gets the same result. That's what makes the handoff stick.
Who runs it
Every engagement is led by a senior operator and staffed by a trained team. We use AI heavily in the build and the running, and the judgment stays human.
Fractional COO leadership
An experienced operator leads the engagement: sets priorities, runs the cadence, makes the judgment calls. COO-level leadership without the full-time salary.
A trained team
The people who run your systems are trained and reviewed against a high bar, with mentorship behind every seat. When something is off, they catch it before you do.
AI in the engine room
We build faster and run sharper with AI underneath. Judgment, priorities, and anything a client sees stay with a person. No bot runs your business unattended.
Why Cambium
Cut a trunk and you can read its whole life in the rings: strong years wide, hard years narrow, all of them kept. Every one of those rings started in the cambium, a thin band of living tissue just under the bark. It's the only part of the trunk that grows. And what it grows doesn't fade: each ring hardens into the wood that holds the tree up.
We took the name because that's the layer we build. Under the visible work of your business sits an operating layer: the workflows, the cadence, the operators who keep them moving. That's where growth actually comes from. And when that layer is alive, every season compounds into structure: the system stays built, the lesson stays learned. The business doesn't just get bigger. It gets steadier as it grows, because nothing is lost.
You see the growth. We keep the layer working.
And because the layer is built and run by people, the mission runs both ways: grow businesses, grow people.
Cambium. The thin living layer that does the growing. Every ring the trunk will ever have starts here.
Growth rings. One per season, kept for good. Wide years, narrow years, all of them holding the tree up.
Bark. The part the world sees.
Built to compound.
